Why 9 Out of 10 Nurses Now Refuse to Work Without These Compression Socks

Door Marieke M.

As a nurse with 8 years of experience, I thought tired, heavy legs were just part of the job. Until I discovered why more and more colleagues have started wearing compression socks during their shifts.

It started with curiosity when I noticed that Sanne, a colleague in our department, suddenly seemed much more energetic after her shifts. "The secret?" I asked. She pointed to her feet: "Compression socks." After wearing compression socks myself for four months, I understand why so many nurses consider them indispensable. Here are 10 reasons why:

1. Your Legs Feel Much Lighter During Long Shifts

The first thing you will notice is that feeling of heaviness in your legs that normally builds up during your shift becomes much less.

What I experience: Instead of my legs feeling heavier as the day progresses, they maintain a lighter, more supported feeling.

What colleagues say: “It's like someone has taken the weight out of my legs,” says Linda, an intensive care nurse from Rotterdam.

The compression socks support natural blood circulation, which reduces that annoying feeling of heaviness.

2. Less Swelling at the End of Your Shift

Before compression socks I always had swollen ankles and feet after a shift. Now that is a thing of the past.

The difference: Where I used to have to untie my shoes because my feet would swell, they now stay the same size all day long.

Practical advantage: No more sore feet on the bike ride home, and at home I no longer have to put my legs up immediately.

Many nurses report this as one of the most noticeable benefits!

3. More Energy Left for After Work

This was the biggest difference for me. Before, I would come home and have no energy for anything other than sitting on the couch.

Now: I have energy to exercise, have social events, or just do fun things with my partner.

Why this happens: Because your legs get less tired during your shift, you have more energy for your private life.

Thomas from Amsterdam: "I'm now going back to the gym after my shifts. I hadn't done that in years because I was always too tired."

4. Better Sleep With Less Leg Discomfort

Many nurses suffer from restless legs or a heavy feeling at night that disrupts sleep.

My experience: Since I wear compression socks, I sleep much more peacefully. My legs no longer feel heavy and uncomfortable in the evening.

Scientific reason: Better circulation during the day means fewer toxins build up in your muscles, resulting in a calmer feeling in the evening.

Marieke from Groningen: "I didn't even know that my bad sleep was caused by my legs until I started wearing compression socks."
